Industry Labelling Compliance: Healthcare, Food & Warehouse

Correct labelling isn't optional in Australia. Across healthcare, food and beverage, chemical handling and warehouse logistics, strict regulatory frameworks govern what must appear on every label. Non-compliance carries significant penalties and, more importantly, puts workers and consumers at risk. This guide outlines the key standards your business needs to meet and how to source compliant labels efficiently.

GHS Chemical Labels

Australia adopted the Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) through the model Work Health and Safety Regulations. Every workplace chemical must carry a GHS-compliant label before it's stored, transported or used on site.

Mandatory Label Elements

  • Product identifier: the chemical name or trade name matching the Safety Data Sheet (SDS).
  • Signal word: either "Danger" or "Warning", depending on hazard severity.
  • Hazard pictograms: standardised diamond-shaped symbols printed in red on white (e.g. flame, skull and crossbones, corrosion).
  • Hazard statements: phrases describing the nature and degree of the hazard (e.g. "Highly flammable liquid and vapour").
  • Precautionary statements: advice on handling, storage, disposal and first aid.
  • Supplier identification: Australian business name, address and phone number.

Labels must be durable enough to remain legible for the life of the container. For drums, IBCs and decanted chemicals, this typically means a synthetic or polyester label stock with UV-resistant inks. At LabelDepot, our chemical label range is engineered for harsh industrial environments including outdoor storage.

Food Labelling Requirements (FSANZ)

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) sets mandatory labelling requirements under the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code. All businesses that manufacture, pack or distribute food products must comply with Standard 1.2.1 and related provisions.

Core Requirements

  • Food name: a prescribed or descriptive name that accurately represents the product.
  • Lot identification: batch or lot code for traceability and recall purposes.
  • Supplier details: name and Australian or New Zealand street address.
  • Ingredient list: listed in descending order by weight, including all additives by class name and number.
  • Allergen declarations: mandatory declaration of allergens such as peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, wheat, soy, fish, shellfish, lupin and sesame.
  • Date marking: "Use By" for safety-critical products or "Best Before" for quality indication.
  • Nutrition Information Panel (NIP): energy, protein, fat, saturated fat, carbohydrate, sugars, sodium per serving and per 100g/100mL.
  • Country of origin: required under the Country of Origin Food Labelling Information Standard 2016, including the kangaroo-in-triangle logo for Australian-grown or produced goods.

Label stock for food contact or near-food environments should be migration-safe and FDA/EU compliant where products are exported. We supply food-grade adhesive labels suitable for refrigerated, frozen and ambient shelf conditions. Contact our team to discuss your specific substrate and storage requirements.

Healthcare and Specimen Labels

In healthcare settings, labelling errors can have life-threatening consequences. Australian hospitals, pathology labs and aged-care facilities operate under strict labelling protocols informed by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (ACSQHC) and relevant state health regulations.

Specimen Label Requirements

  • Patient full name and date of birth.
  • Unique identifier (e.g. Medical Record Number or UR number).
  • Date and time of collection.
  • Collector identification.
  • Specimen type and source.

Medication and Blood Product Labels

The National Standard for User-applied Labelling of Injectable Medicines, Fluids and Lines (ACSQHC) mandates colour-coded, machine-readable labels for syringes and IV lines. Labels must adhere reliably to curved surfaces, withstand alcohol wipe-downs and remain scannable under varying lighting.

LabelDepot supplies blank and pre-printed healthcare labels in standard colour-coded formats compatible with thermal-transfer and direct-thermal printers from Zebra, SATO and Brother. Browse our healthcare label range or request a sample pack.

Warehouse Barcode and Identification Standards

Warehouse labelling in Australia typically follows GS1 standards for barcode symbology and data structure. From SSCC-18 pallet barcodes to racking location codes and EAN-13/GTIN item labels, consistency and scannability are paramount.

Key Standards

  • AS 1319:1994: Safety signs for the occupational environment, governing hazard, prohibition, mandatory and emergency signage in warehouses.
  • GS1-128 / SSCC: Serial Shipping Container Codes for pallet-level tracking across supply chains.
  • ISO 15416: Barcode print quality standard ensuring labels scan reliably at speed.

Poor print quality or incorrect quiet zones are the most common causes of scan failures in warehouse environments. Our warehouse label stocks are optimised for thermal-transfer printing with ribbon compatibility guides available for all major printer brands. See our Warehouse Labelling Guide for detailed best practices.

Choosing the Right Compliant Label

Compliance covers more than what's printed on the label. Label durability, adhesive performance and print legibility over time all matter. Consider the following when selecting label stock:

Industry Key Standard Recommended Material Adhesive Type
Chemical / GHS GHS Rev 7, WHS Regs Synthetic / Polyester Permanent, solvent-resistant
Food & Beverage FSANZ Code, CoOL Semi-gloss or matte paper Freezer-grade or all-temp
Healthcare ACSQHC Standards Thermal synthetic Permanent, alcohol-resistant
Warehouse / Logistics GS1, AS 1319, ISO 15416 Thermal transfer paper/synthetic Permanent or removable
